Installing automatic pool dosing

Dosing systems measure the water and add chemicals as needed. Installing one is about good placement, safe storage and correct set-up.

Automatic dosing systems use probes to measure aspects of the water, and dosing pumps to add chemicals in small amounts to keep readings within set limits. They are common in commercial pools and increasingly used in villas. The probes sit in a flow cell fed from the circulation system; the dosing pumps inject into the return line.

Equipment guides are about choosing, sizing and installing plant, not about day-to-day pool care.

Installation needs space for the controller, pumps and chemical containers, ventilation and spill containment, and injection points positioned correctly in the plumbing. The system is calibrated and set up for the pool, and the owner is shown how to check it and change containers safely.

01Summary

What matters most here

  • Measure and dose

    Probes and pumps work together.

  • Safe storage

    Separate, ventilated and contained.

  • Calibration matters

Probes need setting up and checking.

02Detail

Components

  • Probes and flow cell

    Measuring the water continuously.

  • Controller

    Comparing readings with set points.

  • Dosing pumps

    Injecting chemicals in small amounts.

  • Storage

Containers with spill trays and separation.

03Before you start

Before installing

  • Check plant space

    For storage and ventilation.

  • Plan injection points

    In the return line.

  • Agree calibration routine

    Who will check probes.

—In practice

How to use this

Plan the flow cell location for accurate readings, the dosing points in the return line, and safe, ventilated storage for chemicals, kept apart from each other. Agree how probes will be calibrated, what alarms will warn of problems, and who will maintain the probes and refill the chemicals.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Poor chemical storage
Chemicals stored together, in heat or without ventilation create real hazards. Storage is part of the installation design.
No calibration plan
Probes drift over time. Without regular calibration, the system doses on wrong readings and the water suffers.

04FAQ

Common questions about this

Does dosing replace testing?
No; probes need periodic checking against manual tests.
Is it suitable for villas?
Yes, especially larger pools or busy households.
Where are chemicals stored?
In the plant area, separated and contained.
Can it work with salt chlorination?
Often, controlling the cell output and pH dosing.
