—Background

Controlling pool temperature in Dubai

In Dubai the question is not only how to warm a pool. An outdoor pool can become uncomfortably warm through the summer, so temperature control often means cooling for part of the year and heating for the cooler months. Inverter heat pumps that work in both directions are the usual way of holding a chosen temperature across the seasons.

A heat pump moves heat rather than generating it. In heating mode it takes heat from the surrounding air and puts it into the water; in cooling mode it does the reverse. Its output has to suit the pool’s volume and surface area, how exposed the pool is to sun and wind, and the temperature you want to hold.

The position matters as much as the unit. It needs free airflow, a firm base, drainage for condensate, a pipe route to the plant and an electrical supply suited to its rating.

What to tell us

None of this is required. It is what turns a first reply into an answer rather than another question.

  1. The pool size — either its volume, or its length, width and depth
  2. Which months you want to swim in, and roughly what temperature you want to hold
  3. Whether the pool is covered when it is not in use
  4. Where an outdoor unit could stand, and how far that is from the plant
  5. What electrical supply is available at that position

03Choices

What you will be choosing between

The options that exist for this kind of work. Which one suits a particular pool is a conversation, not a rule.

Function

Heating only suits a pool used mainly in the cooler months, cooling only a pool that is too warm in summer. Heating and cooling together hold a chosen temperature through the year.

  • Heating only
  • Cooling only
  • Heating and cooling
Where the unit stands

Beside the plant keeps pipe runs short. A remote position can suit space or noise but adds pipework and some heat loss. Any screen has to leave the unit enough free air to work.

  • Beside the existing plant
  • Remote, with longer pipe runs
  • Screened or enclosed
Control

Controls on the unit are set at the machine. Remote or app control lets the temperature be changed or scheduled from elsewhere, which matters most for holiday homes and pools used at set times.

—Worth knowing

Before you ask about heat & cool system installation

What tends to change how this kind of job is done. General points about pools and properties, not promises about the work.

A cover changes the sums
Much of a pool’s heat exchange happens at its surface. Covering it when it is not in use reduces heat loss at night and heat gain in the day, so the unit works less to hold the same temperature.
Airflow and neighbours
A heat pump moves a lot of air. It needs open space around it and should not discharge towards a neighbour’s garden or your own seating area.
Supply capacity
Heat pumps draw significant power. Check that the supply and the distribution board can take the additional load before a unit is chosen.
Sizing to the pool
Volume, surface area, shade, wind exposure and the target temperature all feed into the size of unit. A unit chosen on volume alone can struggle in the months it is needed most.

—Questions

Questions people ask

Can one unit both heat and cool a pool?
Yes — reversible inverter heat pumps do both. Whether one unit is enough depends on the pool’s size and on how far the target temperature is from the temperature the water would reach on its own.
Does a pool cover really make a difference to heating or cooling?
Yes. Covering the surface when the pool is not in use cuts the heat it gains or loses, so the unit runs less to hold the same temperature.
Where should the outdoor unit go?
Somewhere with free airflow, a firm level base and drainage, as close to the plant as practical, and away from bedroom windows and neighbours’ terraces.
Can a heat pump be added to an existing pool?
Usually. It connects into the existing circulation after the filter, so the layout of the plant area, the space for pipework and the electrical supply decide how straightforward it is.
