Pool Renovation and Tile Replacement
Full pool makeover, including premium tile installation, re-grouting, structural repair, and waterproofing.

—Background
Deciding how far a renovation needs to go
Pool renovation runs from re-grouting a few tired joints to stripping the interior back to the shell. What decides the extent is less how the pool looks than why it looks that way: a dated colour scheme can be solved at the surface, while tiles that sound hollow, cracks that keep returning or unexplained water loss point to problems behind the finish.
Most renovations need the pool drained, and that brings its own care. An empty shell is exposed to sun and heat, and where groundwater is high it can be pushed from below, so the work is planned to keep the pool empty only as long as it has to be.
A renovation is also the natural moment to deal with anything else that needs the pool empty or the deck lifted: waterline tiles, light niches, return fittings, coping, and pipework or equipment approaching the end of its life.

02Enquiries
What to tell us
None of this is required. It is what turns a first reply into an answer rather than another question.
- What is prompting the work — how it looks, a leak, or a surface that has failed
- Roughly how old the pool is, if you know
- Whether tiles are lifting, cracked, stained, or simply dated
- Whether the pool currently holds water, and whether it is in use
- Photographs of the waterline, the floor, and anything that looks wrong
03Choices
What you will be choosing between
The options that exist for this kind of work. Which one suits a particular pool is a conversation, not a rule.
- Extent of the work
Grout alone refreshes a sound surface. Tiles and grout suit a sound shell with a worn finish. Waterproofing comes in when water is getting behind the finish, and structural repair when the shell itself has cracked or moved.
- Tile type
Ceramic and porcelain are hard-wearing; glass mosaic follows curves and gives depth of colour; natural stone needs suitable sealing and is used more often on copings and surrounds than below the waterline.
- Coping and surround
The coping takes the most foot traffic and sun of any part of the pool. If it is loose, cracked or uneven it is usually dealt with while the pool is empty anyway.
—Worth knowing
Before you ask about pool renovation & tile replacement
What tends to change how this kind of job is done. General points about pools and properties, not promises about the work.
- Find the cause before the finish
- If tiles are lifting or the pool is losing water, the reason behind it decides whether a new surface will last. Re-tiling over a problem that is still there usually means doing it twice.
- Matching an old finish
- Replacing a handful of tiles to match an older interior is rarely invisible. A full band, such as the waterline, or a full interior often gives a cleaner result.
- While it is empty
- Light niches, returns, skimmer throats and the waterline are easiest to inspect and repair with the pool drained. List them before work starts so nothing is missed.
- Equipment at the same time
- If the pump, filter or heating is due for replacement, doing it alongside the renovation avoids refilling a new interior and then disturbing the system again.

—Questions
Questions people ask
- Can a pool be retiled without draining it?
- Small repairs at the waterline can sometimes be done with the water level lowered, but retiling the interior needs the pool drained and dry.
- Why do pool tiles come loose?
- Common reasons include water reaching behind the tiles through failed grout or waterproofing, movement in the shell, and adhesive that was not suited to permanent immersion. Which one applies decides the repair, which is why the cause is established first.
- Is renovating an old pool better than rebuilding it?
- Where the shell is sound, renovation usually makes sense. Where the structure has moved, leaks keep returning or the shape no longer suits the household, rebuilding becomes a genuine option to compare.
- What should be checked while the pool is empty?
- The shell for cracks, the light niches and fittings, the returns and skimmers, and the waterline — everything that is hidden or hard to reach once the pool is full again.
