Loose or hollow pool tiles
A tile that falls off is the visible end of a problem that usually started behind it. Finding out why decides how far the repair goes.
Tiles detach when the bond between tile, adhesive and substrate fails. Common causes include water getting behind tiles through failed grout, adhesive unsuited to permanent immersion, movement in the structure, or thermal expansion when a pool is drained in the sun. Tapping tiles with a hard object reveals hollow areas before they fall.
Renovation guides cover work on a pool that already exists: its surface, its waterproofing and sometimes its structure.
A few isolated hollow tiles can sometimes be removed and refixed. Widespread hollowness suggests a systemic failure and usually leads to retiling. Loose tiles also expose sharp edges and the waterproofing beneath, so they should not be left.

How to use this
Tap tiles methodically and mark hollow areas on a sketch or photograph. Note where they cluster — at the waterline, on steps, across one wall — because the pattern suggests the cause. Small, isolated areas can be re-bedded; widespread hollowness usually means stripping that area and checking the substrate and waterproofing beneath before anything is re-laid.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Re-sticking tiles without finding why
- If water is getting behind the tiles, re-stuck tiles will loosen again within a season or two. Find the route first.
- Draining in full sun without a plan
- An empty pool heating in strong sun can make marginal tiles let go. Plan draining around the weather and the work.
04FAQ
Common questions about this
- Can a loose tile be stuck back?
- Sometimes, if the area around it is sound and the cause is addressed.
- Why do tiles fall off after draining?
- Sun and heat on an empty pool can stress the bond.
- Is a hollow tile urgent?
- It may detach soon and expose the layer behind it.
- Does it mean the pool leaks?
- Not necessarily, but it can indicate water behind the finish.
