—Renovation and tiling
Replacing waterline tiles
The waterline band takes the most punishment in a pool. Replacing it can refresh the whole pool without a full retile.
The tiles at the water’s surface are exposed to sun, evaporation, oils and scale. Over time they can stain, etch or crack, and grout here washes out first. When cleaning no longer restores them, replacing the waterline band is a targeted renovation that changes the look of the pool.
Renovation guides cover work on a pool that already exists: its surface, its waterproofing and sometimes its structure.
The pool is partially drained to expose the band. Old tiles and adhesive are removed, the surface is checked and repaired, and new tiles are fixed and grouted with pool-grade materials. Many owners use the opportunity to choose a contrasting or decorative band.

02Detail
The work
Partial draining
The water is lowered just far enough to expose the band and give the adhesive a dry surface to bond to.
Removal
Old tiles and adhesive are taken off carefully so the tiles below the band and the coping above are not disturbed.
Preparation
Surface repaired and levelled.
New band
Tiles fixed and grouted, then cured.

How to use this
Decide whether the new waterline band should match, contrast or begin a staged update of the pool. The water is lowered to expose the band, the substrate is checked as the old tiles come off, and the band is replaced with tiles and grout suited to the harsh conditions at the surface. Check whether the coping above needs attention at the same time.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Chasing an exact match
- Exact matches to aged tiles are rare, and a near-miss is more noticeable than a contrast. A deliberate change often looks better.
- Ignoring the coping above
- Loose or open-jointed coping lets water run behind the new waterline band and undo the work. Fix both together.
04FAQ
Common questions about this
- Can scale be cleaned instead?
- Often; replacement is for tiles that are damaged or permanently stained.
- Does the pool need fully draining?
- Usually only lowering below the band.
- Can I choose a different tile?
- Yes; many choose a decorative band.
- Will the rest of the pool look different?
- A new band may highlight older tiles; consider the whole pool.
- Does the grout get replaced too?
- Yes. New tiles are grouted with pool-grade grout, and the joint between the band and the tiles below is renewed.
