—Renovation and tiling

Modernising an older pool

An older pool can look and run like a new one. Modernising usually combines new surfaces with better equipment.

Many villas have pools built when finishes, lighting and equipment were different. Dated tiles, harsh lighting, steps that no longer suit the household and inefficient single-speed pumps are common. Modernising can address all of these together, or in stages.

Renovation guides cover work on a pool that already exists: its surface, its waterproofing and sometimes its structure.

Surface updates include new interior finishes, coping and deck. Lighting can move to LED, often in the existing niches. Equipment can be upgraded to variable-speed pumps, modern filtration, salt chlorination, automation and heating and cooling. Adding a cover or changing steps improves everyday use.

01Summary

What matters most here

  • New surfaces

    Finishes, coping and deck.

  • Better equipment

    Efficiency and control.

  • Everyday use

    Steps, covers and lighting.

02Detail

Common upgrades

  • Interior finish

Larger-format porcelain, glass mosaic or a tinted plaster replace dated tiles and change the colour of the water.

  • LED lighting

LED fittings use less power than older lamps, last longer and can offer colour, often fitting existing niches.

  • Variable-speed pumps

Quieter running and lower energy use.

  • Automation

Control of pumps, lights and temperature.

  • Heating and cooling

    Year-round comfort.

03Before you start

Before modernising

  • List what bothers you

    Look, comfort, running cost.

  • Survey condition

    Structure and waterproofing first.

  • Plan stages

    If doing it over time.

—In practice

How to use this

List what feels dated or inefficient: finishes, lighting, steps, equipment and controls. Decide whether to do everything at once while the pool is drained, or in planned stages. Combining surface work with equipment upgrades avoids draining and disturbing the pool twice, and lets new fittings and pipework go in while access is easy.

Mistakes worth avoiding

New surfaces, old plant
A refreshed pool still running noisy, inefficient equipment feels old in use. Review the plant as part of the plan.
Staging work that needs draining
Anything that needs the pool empty is best done together, because draining and refilling are disruptive and costly.

04FAQ

Common questions about this

Can old light niches take LED lights?
Often, with compatible fittings.
Is it worth modernising rather than rebuilding?
Usually, if the structure is sound.
Can modernising be done in stages?
Yes, though items that need the pool drained, such as finishes and light fittings, are more practical together.
Will a new pump reduce running costs?
Variable-speed pumps often use less energy.
Can a cover be added to an older pool?
Surface-mounted covers can be added to many rectangular pools; built-in covers need structural work.
