—Heating and cooling

Sizing a pool heat pump

An undersized heat pump runs constantly without reaching the target. An oversized one costs more than it needs to. Sizing finds the middle.

Heat pumps are sized on the heat a pool loses and the heat needed to raise its temperature. Losses come mainly from the surface — evaporation, wind and radiation — so surface area and exposure matter as much as volume. Covers dramatically reduce losses when closed. The temperature you want to hold, and the coolest months you want to swim in, set the demand.

Temperature guides explain how pools in a hot climate are heated in winter and cooled in summer.

Sizing also considers how quickly you want to warm the pool from cold and whether the same unit will cool in summer. Manufacturers publish output at standard conditions; a proper selection considers Dubai’s actual temperatures. Providing accurate pool details gives a better match.

01Summary

What matters most here

  • Surface losses dominate

    Area and exposure matter.

  • Covers change the size

    Less heat lost overnight.

  • Target temperature

    Sets the demand.

02Detail

Sizing inputs

  • Volume

    The water to be heated.

  • Surface area

    Where most heat is lost.

  • Exposure

    Wind and shade.

  • Cover use

Whether the pool is covered when idle.

  • Season

Which months you want to swim.

03Before you start

Information to provide

  • Pool dimensions

    Length, width and depths.

  • Desired temperature

    And months of use.

  • Cover plans

    Yes or no.

—In practice

How to use this

Provide the pool’s surface area, volume, exposure to wind and sun, target temperature and the months you want to swim. Ask for sizing based on heat loss and demand, and whether a cover has been assumed. Compare units on their output at realistic conditions for your pool, not on headline figures measured in ideal conditions.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Sizing by volume only
Surface area and exposure drive heat loss more than volume. Sizing on volume alone often leads to the wrong unit.
Forgetting the cover assumption
Whether the pool is covered changes the size of unit needed considerably. Make sure the sizing matches real use.

04FAQ

Common questions about this

Can a heat pump be too big?
It costs more to buy and may cycle more than necessary.
Does a cover change the size needed?
Yes, by reducing losses when the pool is not in use.
How long to warm a cold pool?
It depends on size and conditions; heat pumps raise temperature gradually.
Can one unit heat and cool?
Combined heat and cool units do both.
