Blocked pool pipes

A blocked line shows up as one skimmer that will not pull or one return that barely pushes. Finding which line is the first job.

Pool pipes can be blocked by leaves and debris that pass the baskets, small toys, broken fittings, scale build-up, or roots that have entered through a cracked joint. Symptoms include a skimmer with no suction, a return with weak flow, low pressure or a pump that struggles to prime.

Diagnostic guides describe what an owner can observe safely. They do not locate a fault; testing on site does that.

Each line is tested in turn by isolating others with valves and checking flow. Once the blocked line is identified, it may be cleared by flushing, using air or water pressure, or with drain-clearing tools. If roots or a collapse are suspected, the line may need inspection and repair. Afterwards, flow is checked and baskets reviewed to stop recurrence.

01Summary

What matters most here

  • Identify the line

Isolate and test each in turn.

  • Clear carefully

Pressure or tools suited to pool pipes.

  • Prevent recurrence

    Baskets and covers in place.

02Detail

Common culprits

  • Debris

Leaves and grit past damaged baskets.

  • Objects

Small toys or caps drawn into skimmers.

  • Roots

    Entering through cracked joints.

  • Scale

    Narrowing pipes over time.

  • Collapsed sections

    From ground movement or damage.

03Before you start

Before calling

  • Check baskets

    Skimmer and pump.

  • Note which fitting is weak

    Skimmer or return.

  • Note recent events

    Storms, toys, works.

—In practice

How to use this

Test each line in turn by isolating the others and watching flow at its skimmer or return. Once the blocked line is found, clear it with methods suited to the pipe, and if blockages recur in the same line, have it checked for roots, damage or a collapsed section rather than clearing it repeatedly.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Forcing the blockage
Excessive pressure applied to clear a blockage can damage joints and old pipe, turning a blockage into a leak.
Not isolating each line
Testing lines one at a time finds the blockage far faster than guessing from overall flow at the plant.

04FAQ

Common questions about this

Can I clear a blockage myself?
Simple basket clearing yes; line clearing needs care to avoid damage.
Why does one skimmer not pull?
Its line may be blocked or its valve closed.
Can roots block pool pipes?
Yes, if they find a crack.
How is a collapse confirmed?
By testing and sometimes inspecting the line.
