Glass filter media
Recycled glass can replace sand in many pool filters. The change is simple, but it helps to know what differs.
Glass filter media is crushed and processed glass graded for filtration. It is used in the same pressure vessels as sand. Suppliers describe benefits such as resistance to clumping and channelling and efficient backwashing; how much difference it makes depends on the pool, the filter and how it is looked after.
Equipment guides are about choosing, sizing and installing plant, not about day-to-day pool care.
Changing over involves emptying the filter, inspecting the laterals and internals, and filling with the quantity and grades of glass the filter manufacturer specifies. Because glass is lighter than sand, the volume and backwash settings may differ. The first backwash after changeover removes fines.
01Summary
What matters most here
Same vessels
Fits most sand filters.
Different behaviour
Backwash and quantities may differ.
Follow specifications
Grades and amounts for your filter.
02Detail
Changeover steps
Empty the filter
The pump is isolated, the filter drained and the old sand scooped out carefully so the internals are not damaged.
Inspect internals
Laterals and standpipe for damage.
Fill with glass
Coarser grades go in first to protect the laterals, then finer grades on top, in the quantities the filter manufacturer specifies.
Initial backwash
To clear fines.
03Before you start
Before switching
Check filter compatibility
With the manufacturer.
Note the filter model
For media quantities.
Plan disposal
For old sand.
—In practice
How to use this
Check the filter manufacturer’s guidance on glass media and the grades and quantities required. Plan the changeover: remove the old sand, inspect the laterals, add glass in the correct grades and amounts, then backwash and rinse before returning to normal filtration. Watch pressure and clarity over the following weeks.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Using the wrong grades
- Glass media comes in grades. Using the wrong ones, or the wrong amounts, affects filtration and backwashing performance.
- Not inspecting the laterals
- Cracked laterals let media pass into the pool. The changeover is the easiest moment to check and replace them.
04FAQ
Common questions about this
- Is glass better than sand?
- Both work; glass has different characteristics that some owners prefer.
- Can any sand filter take glass?
- Many can; check the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Does glass need less backwashing?
- It can behave differently; follow pressure readings.
- Is the changeover difficult?
- It is straightforward with care for the internals.
- What happens to the old sand?
- It is bagged and removed; it should not be emptied into gardens or drains.
