—Comparing the options

Overflow or skimmer pool

In a skimmer pool the water sits below the edge. In an overflow pool it is level with the edge and spills over. The difference shapes the whole system.

Skimmer pools draw surface water through openings in the wall, called skimmers, with the water level a little below the coping. They are simpler to build and run, and most villa pools use them. Overflow pools have the water level at the top of the edge; water spills into a channel around the pool and flows to a balance tank, from which it is pumped back after filtration.

Comparison guides set out how two pool options differ and when an owner might prefer one over the other.

Overflow pools look flush and calm, skim the entire surface continuously and suit contemporary designs. They need a balance tank, more pipework, level controls and careful construction, and usually higher running costs. Skimmer pools are simpler and more forgiving, though the waterline sits below the edge and skimming happens only at the skimmers.

01Summary

What matters most here

  • Skimmer: simpler

Most villa pools use this system.

  • Overflow: flush water

    Water level with the edge.

  • Overflow needs more

    Balance tank, channels and controls.

02Detail

Comparing them

  • Appearance

Overflow gives a flush, mirror-like surface; skimmer has a visible waterline below the edge.

  • Surface cleaning

Overflow skims the whole perimeter; skimmers pull from fixed points.

  • Equipment

Overflow needs a balance tank and level controls.

  • Construction

Overflow channels must be precisely level.

  • Running

Overflow systems usually involve more pumping.

03Before you start

Before deciding

  • Consider the look

    Flush or traditional edge.

  • Find space for a tank

    If choosing overflow.

  • Compare running needs

    Pumping and top-up.

—In practice

How to use this

Decide whether a water surface level with the edge is worth the extra equipment an overflow pool needs. Consider space for a balance tank and channels, more pipework and pump capacity, cleaning of channels, and increased evaporation. For most villa pools, a well-designed skimmer pool meets the need with a simpler system.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Choosing on looks alone
Overflow pools need a balance tank, channels and more plant. The look comes with real space, cost and maintenance demands.
Ignoring evaporation
Water running over an edge evaporates faster, which matters in Dubai’s climate and adds to top-up demand.

04FAQ

Common questions about this

Which is more common in villas?
Skimmer pools, because they are simpler.
Does overflow keep water cleaner?
It skims the whole surface, which helps with floating debris.
Can a skimmer pool be converted?
It is a major structural change.
Is an overflow pool noisier?
Water running into channels makes some sound.
