—Building a new pool

Fitting a pool into a small garden

A small garden can still take a pool. The design simply has to work harder to leave space for everything else.

In townhouses and compact villas, the garden may be only a few metres deep. Plunge pools, narrow lap pools and pools that run along a boundary make the most of limited space. The pool’s edge, coping and a usable strip of deck still need room, and the community may set minimum distances from boundaries and the house.

Construction guides follow a new pool from the first idea to the first swim, so each stage is easier to plan and to question.

Equipment needs a home too; in small gardens it may sit in a side passage or a compact enclosure, where noise and access are considered carefully. Construction access is often the biggest constraint, sometimes requiring hand digging. A well-designed small pool can transform a garden without taking it over.

01Summary

What matters most here

  • Plunge or lap shapes

    Suit narrow or short gardens.

  • Check setbacks

    Boundary and house distances.

  • Plan equipment space

    Side passages or compact enclosures.

02Detail

Design approaches

  • Plunge pools

Compact and deep enough to cool off.

  • Lap-style pools

Long and narrow, along a boundary.

  • Raised pools

    Partly above ground, reducing excavation.

  • Integrated seating

Steps and ledges that double as seats.

03Before you start

Before designing

  • Measure the garden

    And mark out options.

  • Check community rules

    For small plots.

  • Assess access

    For construction.

—In practice

How to use this

Measure the garden and draw the community’s setbacks on it first; what remains is what the pool, deck and plant must share. Try layouts with a plunge pool, a narrow lap pool and a pool along a boundary, each leaving a usable strip of deck. Consider a bench or ledge to add seating without adding footprint, and plan where the plant will sit.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Using the whole garden for water
A pool that leaves no deck or planting feels cramped and is awkward to use. Balance water with usable space around it.
Forgetting the plant
In a small garden the plant can end up beside the seating area. Plan a ventilated, screened position for it from the start.

04FAQ

Common questions about this

How small can a pool be?
Plunge pools can be very compact; the useful size depends on how it will be used.
Will a pool leave room for anything else?
With careful layout, a deck and planting can remain.
Is a small pool cheaper to run?
Less water to heat or cool and treat, but equipment still runs.
Can a small garden be accessed for construction?
Often with smaller machines or hand digging.
