Adding a sun ledge to a pool
A sun ledge is a shallow shelf for lounging and paddling. It changes how a pool is used, especially in families.
A sun ledge — sometimes called a tanning ledge or shelf — is a shallow area a few centimetres to a few tens of centimetres deep, usually beside the steps. Adults can lie on in-water loungers; small children can play with supervision; and it creates a transition between deck and pool.
Design guides set out the choices that are hard to change once the shell is built.
The ledge takes space from the main pool, so its size is balanced against swimming area. Because the water is shallow, it warms quickly in the sun, which is pleasant in winter but very warm in summer. Shade over a sun ledge makes it usable for more of the year in Dubai.

Size
Large enough for the number of loungers or chairs you plan, with space to step between them without stepping off the ledge.
Position
Near steps, with a gentle transition.
Shade
Umbrellas or structures for summer use.

—In practice
How to use this
Decide what the ledge is for — in-water loungers, children’s play, a shaded seat — and set its depth accordingly. Place it beside the steps and where it gets the sun or shade you want at the times you will use it. Remember that it takes space from the main pool and that its shallow water warms faster than the rest.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Wrong depth for its purpose
- In-water loungers need a specific depth range, and children’s play needs another. Check the intended use before the depth is fixed.
- Full sun in summer
- A shallow ledge in full sun gets very warm in summer. Plan shade over it, or position it where afternoon shade falls.
04FAQ
Common questions about this
- Is a sun ledge safe for children?
- It provides shallow water, but children always need supervision.
- Does it make the pool smaller?
- It uses part of the area; the design balances the two.
- Can umbrellas go in a ledge?
- Yes, with sleeves built into the ledge.
- Does it get hot?
- Shallow water warms quickly; shade helps.
- Can a sun ledge have a bubbler?
- Yes. Bubblers are often set into ledges and need a supply line planned before the shell is built.
