The bucket test for pool water loss

Pools lose water to evaporation every day, especially in Dubai. A bucket test compares the pool with a container that can only evaporate.

A bucket filled with pool water is placed on a pool step so it sits at the same temperature as the pool, with the water inside roughly level with the pool’s surface. Marks are made inside the bucket at its water level and on the outside of the bucket at the pool’s water level. The pump is run as normal, and auto top-up is switched off.

Diagnostic guides describe what an owner can observe safely. They do not locate a fault; testing on site does that.

After a day or two, both levels are compared. If the pool has dropped noticeably more than the bucket, water is leaving the pool by another route. Running the test once with the pump on and once with it off can give further clues. Rain, heavy swimming and splashing disturb the result, so calm days give the clearest reading.

01Summary

What matters most here

  • Same conditions

Bucket sits in the pool water.

  • Compare drops

    Pool versus bucket.

  • Turn off auto top-up

    Or the test is meaningless.

02Detail

How to run it

  • Place the bucket

On a step, filled to near pool level.

  • Mark both levels

    Inside and outside the bucket.

  • Wait

One to two days without swimming or rain.

  • Compare

A greater pool drop suggests a leak.

  • Repeat with pump off

    To see if loss changes.

03Before you start

For a reliable result

  • Disable auto top-up

    For the whole test.

  • Avoid swimming

    During the test.

  • Choose calm days

    No rain or high wind.

—In practice

How to use this

Place a bucket of pool water on a pool step so it sits at the same temperature, mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level outside it, and switch off any automatic top-up. Run the pump as normal, avoid backwashing or rain days, and compare the two levels after a day or more.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Backwashing during the test
Backwashing sends pool water to waste and makes the pool look as if it is leaking. Avoid it for the length of the test.
Putting the bucket elsewhere
A bucket standing on the deck heats differently from the pool. It must sit in the pool water to compare like with like.

04FAQ

Common questions about this

How much difference indicates a leak?
A consistently larger drop in the pool than in the bucket suggests one.
Why turn off auto top-up?
It refills the pool and hides the loss.
Should I test with the pump off?
Comparing pump on and off can help locate the leak.
Is a bucket test conclusive?
It indicates a leak; further tests find where.
