Persistently low system pressure
Low pressure usually means the pump is not getting enough water. The cause is almost always on the suction side.
A filter gauge reading well below normal suggests reduced flow into the pump. Common causes include full skimmer or pump baskets, a low water level that lets air into the skimmer, partially closed suction valves, blockages in suction lines, and air leaks at pump lids, unions or fittings on the suction side. A worn pump impeller can also reduce output.
Diagnostic guides describe what an owner can observe safely. They do not locate a fault; testing on site does that.
Weak returns, air bubbles and noisy running often accompany low pressure. Simple checks — water level, baskets, valve positions, the pump lid seal — resolve many cases. Persistent low pressure after these checks points to a suction-line blockage, air leak or pump problem that needs testing.
01Summary
What matters most here
Suction side
Most causes are before the pump.
Check simple things
Water level, baskets, valves.
Persistent cases
Need line and pump testing.
02Detail
Possible causes
Low water level
Air drawn in at skimmers.
Full baskets
Leaves and debris in the skimmer or pump basket restrict the water reaching the pump.
Suction valves
A skimmer or drain valve left partly closed after maintenance starves the pump.
Air leaks
Pump lid, unions or pipes.
Pump wear
Reduced impeller performance.

Check valves

—In practice
How to use this
Check the skimmer and pump baskets, the water level at the skimmers, and the suction valves, then look for air leaks at the pump lid, unions and suction fittings. If all of these are fine, the next steps are checking suction lines for blockages and the pump’s impeller for wear or debris.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Looking at the return side
- Low pressure almost always means the pump is not getting enough water. The cause is on the suction side, before the pump.
- Overlooking a low water level
- A water level that falls below the skimmer mouths lets air into the system and drops pressure straight away.
04FAQ
Common questions about this
- Is low pressure bad for the pump?
- Running without enough water can damage it.
- Why are there bubbles?
- Air is entering on the suction side.
- Can a blocked pipe cause low pressure?
- Yes, suction-line blockages reduce flow.
- Should I keep running the pump?
- Not if it is running dry or loud; switch off and check.
- Can a new pump lid seal fix low pressure?
- Sometimes. A worn or dry lid O-ring lets air in, and replacing or lubricating it as the manufacturer directs can restore pressure.
